What We Do

Tech Crew is a society for anyone interested in technical theatre. Working mainly in the professional touring venue Warwick Arts Centre – including the black box studio, and the 550 seat theatre – we offer opportunities to work on a range of student productions - from lighting design, sound design through to set design and stage management. We welcome all members of the student community, regardless of how much experience you have! We also run training throughout the year for members who want to try their hand at any type of technical theatre.

Tech Crew organise lighting and sound designers for almost all the student productions here at Warwick and also provide equipment hire to other societies for use in their events. Each year we work closely with Warwick Student Arts Festival to co-ordinate all the lighting, sound and staging for the 100+ events! We also organise tech for a lot of Warwick Drama shows as they’re taken elsewhere, and may have opportunities to go to the National Student Drama Festival, and the Edinburgh Fringe!

Exec

Chris Miles President

Hi I’m Chris and I’m a third year Maths student. At Warwick, I’ve been involved with a variety of shows, including lighting designing The Trial, East, Carmen, The Glass Menagerie and Avenue Q; and tech managing Seven Lears, Avenue Q, Masterpieces and Witch.

I have also been the Head of Festival Lighting for WSAF 2015, following on from being the Atrium lighting designer in 2014. Last year I was the Training Manager of Tech Crew. I loved the experience and can’t wait to get going as this years President!

As President I’m responsible for running the society, meeting with the SU and ensuring that the society is adhering to its aims. Free to send me an email at president@warwicktechcrew.co.uk if you have any questions about the society or want to know how to get involved.

Amanda Fleming Vice-President

I’m Amanda and I’m a second year English and Theatre student. As your Vice President, I’m in charge of all your lovely hires, which means you’ll all be treated to me sprawled near to, over, or in a flight case, making sure you have all the cables and such that you need. Over the last year with Tech Crew, I’ve stuck my finger in almost every pie: set, stage, lighting, sound, and been near a pyro once or twice. (Exciting stuff.) Come and say hi, and maybe bring tea because I love tea (milk, no sugar). I'm also in charge of equipment and making sure that everything is where it should be and that its all working properly, in other words; a place for everything and everything in its place in that damn cupboard. (I love it really.) As a side note, I can do a really neat trick with some handcuffs.

I hope to bring you joy, confectionery, wit drier than gin, and a little bit of whip-cracking, cupboard straightening sass. Please come and track me down, you won’t fail to miss me as some/most of my outfit choices are questionable at best and unsafe at worst (and often louder than the band).

Em Hall Treasurer

Hi I’m Emma, and I am a second year PPE student and this year’s Tech Crew Treasurer. I’m quite new to theatre productions at Warwick, although I enjoyed working back stage in my first year. My background is with costume design and creation. That means this year will be quite the learning curve for me, but my experience in accounting stands me in good stead.

My roles as treasurer include keeping track of the incoming and outgoing payments from our account, invoicing any equipment that is hired from the society, and sending relevant forms to anyone in the society who needs reimbursing. One of the most important jobs is to submit the budget at the end of the year, working with the rest of the executive to make sure we have it spot on.

Ellie Smith Secretary

Hello! I’m Ellie, a third year engineer and Secretary for Tech Crew. Having been involved more on the music side of productions before coming to Warwick, joining the society last year was my first venture into the world of technical theatre.

I joined Tech Crew thinking it would be a brilliant way to get involved in theatre without having to perform, and to give some meaning to all the electronics I’d been studying. It’s also given me the perfect chance to see lots of shows and performances, and is a great opportunity to meet new people and learn a whole new set of skills. Since joining, I’ve been lucky enough to get involved with get-ins, get-outs, sound and lighting in a variety of shows, including Into The Woods, Seven Lears, Holmes for Rent and Carmen.

As Secretary, I’m responsible for all administrative matters, which includes looking after the emails, taking minutes at exec meetings and helping with elections.

Doug Cairns Socials

I’m Doug and I’m a second year Theatre student. I’m your Social Sec which means I do the drinks things. On top of which, it’s also my job to organise all of our extravagant socials to shows, for curry, to our occasional circles and everything in between.

I've had experience as a Stage Manager, Lighting designer, Set designer, actor and singer, I very much dislike being pinned down to a particular job. I have level 1 award in cycling proficiency.

Iain Galpin Training

My Name’s Iain; I am a fourth year student studying biochemistry, and has been a member of Tech Crew since the beginning of my second Year. Whilst at Warwick I have worked on a variety of shows, including: Don Giovanni and Carmen(Opera Warwick), Guys & Dolls, Sweeney Todd (MTW), Seven Lears and East (WUDS), either helping with the In and the Out, or as a lighting operator, as well as being lighting designer for WUDS’ Seven Lears and Troilus & Cressida. My expertise is mainly in lighting, but I’ve done some sound and stage work as well, both here and at school.

In my role as Training Manager it is my duty to organise and run training workshops for members, teaching them how to use our equipment. I also organise shadowing of roles during productions.

We can also arrange external hires for societies, and can be available to set-up and run the equipment for any event. We do not charge for services, only the hire of equipment - we enjoy doing events!

For a quote on any of the equipment, please contact our Vice President who is responsible for hires: exec@warwicktechcrew.co.uk
